Detailed self-hosting write-up

| Authored: 18 Jul, 2025 | Edited: Yesterday

Lots of hard-earned lessons in this article. I have a dedicated home-lab tag in Zotero for articles like this.

I’m a bit on the fence as to whether these types of projects are worth the time and on-going hassle. On the yes side, it would largely focus on privacy and control over my data. However, I’ve had this go very bad in the past (data loss) and frankly I’d rather spend my time creating new things. And now that I’m later in my career, I’m less focused on the cheapest solution vs. a more bullet proof solution that “Just Works” and frees me up to do other things.

Regardless, definately a shout out to the author for sharing their research. There are some things I’d like to take a deeper look into including their NAS setup, how they configured internal domains, and the trade-offs between Tailscale and Headscale.

I also like the target they set of “good enough.”

Perfect is the enemy of done!
